Discord Emoji Size and Sticker Size Guide
Discord emoji size is 128x128 px and under 256 KB. See the limits for animated emoji, stickers and chat GIFs, why uploads fail, and how to make a GIF that fits.
The Discord emoji size to aim for is 128x128 pixels, with a file under 256 KB. Discord shows emoji at about 32 px in chat, so a small square image is enough. Anything bigger is scaled down, and a file over 256 KB is rejected. Animated emoji are GIFs and follow the same limits. Stickers are different: they are 320x320 and can be up to 512 KB.
This guide lists every size, explains why emoji come out blurry or get refused, and shows how to make a Discord emoji GIF that fits. Limits below were checked on 2026-11-05 against Discord's developer documentation and Discord's own blog; Discord's help center blocks automated reading, so where we could not open a help page we say so.
Discord emoji size, sticker size and GIF limits
| Item | Size | Max file size | Formats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Custom emoji | 128x128 recommended | 256 KB | JPEG, PNG, GIF, WEBP, AVIF |
| Animated emoji | 128x128 recommended | 256 KB | GIF |
| Sticker | 320x320 maximum | 512 KB | PNG, APNG, GIF, Lottie (verified or partnered servers only) |
| GIF or file sent in chat | No size rule | 20 MB for free users | GIF, PNG, JPEG, video |
A few notes on the table:
- Emoji: Discord's developer documentation says emoji and animated emoji have a maximum of 256 KiB, and describes the image as "the 128x128 emoji image". Discord's own blog says other sizes work and that you can resize and crop while uploading.
- Stickers: the developer documentation gives 320 by 320 pixels as the maximum, 512 KiB, and no more than 5 seconds for an animated sticker. Each server gets five free sticker slots, and Server Boosts add more.
- Chat files: Discord raised the free upload limit from 10 MB to 20 MB in August 2026 (Discord's File Attachments FAQ). Nitro Basic allows 50 MB and full Nitro up to 1 GB. Older pages that say 10 MB or 25 MB are out of date.
- Where sources disagree: Discord's blog says there is no hard emoji limit and that larger files are compressed, while the developer documentation says uploads above 256 KiB fail. We go with the documentation: keep emoji under 256 KB and you never have to find out.
- Not listed: we could not confirm avatar or server banner sizes from a Discord page, so they are not in the table.
How many emoji slots does a server get?
Discord's blog lists static and animated emoji slots separately: 50 of each for a standard server, 100 of each at Boost Level 1, 150 at Level 2 and 250 at Level 3. A server that drops a Boost level loses slots until the level returns. Check Server Settings for your own count, since Discord changes these numbers now and then.
Animated emoji upload the same way as static ones, but they go in their own animated section. Discord says you need Nitro to use a newly uploaded animated emoji.
Why the wrong Discord emoji size looks blurry or gets rejected
- The file is over 256 KB. This is the most common reason for a failed upload. Long GIFs with many frames and many colors are the usual cause.
- The art is too detailed. At about 32 px, thin lines and small text blur into mush. A 128x128 image only helps if the subject is bold: one object, thick outline, two or three main colors.
- The background is not transparent. A white box around the subject looks wrong on Discord's dark theme. Use a transparent PNG or GIF.
- A sticker was uploaded as an emoji, or the other way round. Stickers are larger and live under their own settings tab.
- The GIF is too long. Each extra frame adds weight. Eight frames is plenty for a loop that reads at emoji size.
How to make a Discord emoji GIF that fits
You do not need to film or edit anything. You write what should move, and an AI model draws the frames. This works well for emoji because a loop of one repeating motion is exactly what the format is good at.
- Open the Discord GIF maker or the AI emoji generator. Both use the 320 px sticker size with a transparent background.
- Describe one subject and one repeating motion. For example: "A small cactus in a pot waves one arm and wiggles happily, kawaii style, transparent background, seamless loop." Or: "A round blue slime bounces up and down and squishes flat at the bottom, cartoon, thick outline."
- Choose 8 frames. In our tests an 8-frame, 320 px transparent GIF came out at about 160 to 210 KB, under the 256 KB emoji limit. A 12-frame GIF is often 250 to 390 KB, which fits a sticker but can be too big for an emoji.
- Generate, then check the file size shown under the result. If it is over 256 KB, choose fewer frames and run it again. The AI emoji generator also has a 128 px download button for the exact recommended emoji size.
- Download the file.
For a still emoji, a PNG sticker works the same way: see the AI sticker generator, which adds an optional white die-cut border. To compare tools first, read our list of the best AI sticker generators. The same 320 px files also suit other apps: see the Slack emoji maker and the Twitch emote maker.
GIF Generator AI has no free tier. A Standard emoji or sticker GIF costs 1 credit, and credit packs start at $4.99 for 40 credits that never expire. See pricing, or go to the GIF generator to try a prompt.
How to upload an emoji or sticker to Discord
For an emoji, you need to be the server owner or have a role that lets you manage emoji and stickers.
- Open your server and choose Server Settings.
- Go to Emoji and press Upload Emoji.
- Pick your file. Discord shows a preview and lets you crop. Give it a short name.
- Save. Static and animated emoji appear in their own sections.
For a sticker, go to Server Settings, then Stickers, and press Upload Sticker. Add a name, a related emoji and a short description, then choose your file.
FAQ
What size should a Discord emoji be? 128x128 pixels, square, under 256 KB. Other sizes are accepted and get scaled, but 128x128 is Discord's recommended size.
What is the Discord sticker size? Stickers can be up to 320x320 pixels and 512 KB. Formats are PNG, APNG and GIF; Lottie is only for verified or partnered servers. An animated sticker can run for at most 5 seconds.
What is the Discord GIF size limit? There is no pixel rule for a GIF sent in chat, only a file size limit: 20 MB for free users since August 2026, 50 MB with Nitro Basic and up to 1 GB with Nitro. A GIF used as an emoji must still be under 256 KB.
Do I need Nitro for animated emoji? You can upload an animated emoji in the animated section of Server Settings. Discord says Nitro is needed to use a newly uploaded one.
Can I make an animated Discord emoji from text? Yes. Describe one subject and one motion in the Discord GIF maker, choose 8 frames and a transparent background, and download a 320 px GIF that is usually under 256 KB.
Why does my emoji upload fail? The usual cause is a file over 256 KB. Cut the frame count, simplify the art or use a smaller size and try again.
